The Effect of Diabetes and Exercise on Knee Joint Stiffness and Mcl Structural Properties in the Rat

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Diabetes has a myriad of symptoms and deleterious effects throughout the body. Orthopedic considerations have primarily focused on the increased stiffness and brittleness of bone tissue, due to the associated increase in fracture risk [1, 2]. However, soft tissues are also affected causing limited joint mobility [3, 4]. Increases in ligament and joint capsule stiffness may cause impaired mobility, impaired proprioception, and other functional limitations. In addition, the perception of stiff joints may cause diabetic patients to avoid physical activity that could actually improve both their overall health and their joint stiffness. Though there is some clinical evidence that diabetes increases the stiffness of soft tissues [5], and reduces joint range of motion [3, 4], recent clinical evidence indicates that there may be no significant increase in overall joint stiffness, but only range of motion [6]. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of uncontrolled type I diabetes on overall joint stiffness in the rat and the ability of exercise to modulate (prevent or reduce) any diabetes-related changes.

Introduction: Although, the effect of direct intra-articular injection of bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) on the repair of articular cartilage and the effect of Elaeagnus angustifolia extract on pain relief in patients with osteoarthritis have been investigated, no studies has been conducted to compare the effects of these two therapeutic methods on the mechanical properties of articular cartila...

Purpose: The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of low-power Helium-Neon laser (LPL) on collagen fibril thickness of incisized medial collateral ligament of knee joint (MCL) in rat. Materials and Methods: MCL of right hind limb of 35 male adult sprague Dawley rat under general anesthesia were transversly incisized. Rats were randomly divitded into normal, control, first lase...
متن کاملThe effect of variable relative insertion orientation of human knee bone-ligament-bone complexes on the tensile stiffness.
In order to evaluate the contribution of the knee ligaments to restrain joint motions, knowledge about their structural properties is required. Due to the variable relative insertion orientation of the ligaments during knee motion, however, different fiber bundles are recruited, each with their specific mechanical properties. Hence, the structural properties vary as a function of knee motion. F...
متن کاملComparison of the Effect of 8 Weeks of Land Exercise Therapy and Hydrotherapy on Functional Activities of Elderly Women with Knee Osteoarthritis
Objectives: Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems in older adults. Pain, stiffness, tenderness, decreased muscle strength and joint range of motion, impaired proprioception, and balance problems lead to impaired physical function, making the person incapable of performing functional activities. Therefore, it is necessary to use strategies to control and reduce t...
